THE UN NEEDS YOUR BYTES!!!


Contest deadline: Friday, 5 October 2001


The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme announces its multimedia
contest for those involved in volunteering or would like to be. The contest
is open to persons familiar in Web, Flash, Graphic designing or Film
Editing. The winners of the contest will have their works profiled on our
upcoming release of the Young Volunteering CD ROM and IYV website that has
an audience of over 20,000 subscribers.
The Young Volunteering CD ROM is a guide for young people searching for
volunteer opportunities, while engaging them in an informative and
interactive way. It will inspire and direct young people to resources for
volunteer activity. We will select top entries from each of the three
categories: Audiovisual, Graphics and Flash animations. Within each
category, the following requirements apply:


1) FLASH games or presentations:
- under version Flash 4 games or presentations
- must focus on celebrating or promoting volunteering, particularly
as it relates to youth, both as volunteers and as recipients of service
- the pieces must be of use to young people looking to volunteer
(e.g. a game or a puzzle)
- Games or presentations are limited to 5 megabytes(uncompressed)
- Games or presentations should not require any special plug ins
beyond Flash


2) Audiovisual contributions:
- video (small video clips on VOLUNTEERING)
- acceptable format: .mpeg
- QuickTime or RealAudio limited to 5 megabytes (uncompressed)


3) Graphic contributions:
-acceptable formats include: .gif or .jpg or .png
-cartoons, posters, drawings, collages, volunteer action photos


***REQUIREMENTS:
- must be submitted electronically
- must focus on YOUNG VOLUNTEERS!!
- should appeal to a wide range of age groups among young people
- should appeal to people from different cultures
- are limited to 5 megabytes(uncompressed)
- be fun and creative


***RESOURCES:
- Participants are encouraged to use the International Year of
Volunteers 2001 logo which is available to download from the IYV web site
at: www.iyv2001.org/iyv_eng/toolkit/logo/logo.htm
- Thousands of volunteer photos are available on the IYV web site.
If you wish to use any photos, please ask the owner listed under the photo.

***RESTRICTIONS:
- We will NOT accept executable files
- We will NOT accept anything that might be considered obscene or
offensive
- All persons submitting materials must be the author and/or owner
- Submissions not completely owned by the contributor cannot be
accepted
- All submissions may be used by the United Nations Volunteers
Programme unlimitedly in a variety of volunteer promotional activities.
- The author will always be credited.


***PRIZES:
Top winners from each of the three multimedia categories will receive a
package of IYV volunteer goodies, in addition to receiving fame, fortune
and our eternal gratitude. Entries will also be showcased on the IYV website
and Young Volunteering CD ROM. Other prizes will be awarded such as "best
effort" and "silliest", to name a few, will be at the discretion of the
judging panel.


Contributions should be submitted no later than Friday, 5 October 2001.
