1000 people killed in Congo |
Monday, 07 April 2003 |
A thousand people were massacred on Thursday in the
Democratic Republic of Congo, it has emerged. United Nations
peace-keepers in Drodro, near the Ugandan border, saw mass
graves and a list of those who died in a three-hour killing spree.
Hamadoun Toure, head of the UN mission to Congo, said it
was the worst single atrocity since the start of the Congolese
civil war. Last week a peace deal was signed between rival
factions in the country, but doubts remain as to its effectiveness.
